]]>The driving force behind the creation and maintenance of Shout-it-Now’s service excellence can be described as Operations Research (OR) or Implementation Science. In the health field, OR has become increasingly important not only to save money but to identify better approaches to saving lives.
Shout-it-Now’s use of various quality improvement tools has caught the attention of international scientists who use OR in a variety of fields. One such group is the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), which was impressed with Shout-it-Now’s use of modeling to improve client flow and experience. In fact, IFORS published a profile of Shout-it-Now in its annual report that was distributed this month at its annual meeting in Poland. To view the profile, visit http://www.ifors.org/newsletter/ifors-news-june2016.pdf .
Additionally, the Operational Research Society contacted Shout-it-Now to include a profile of our OR work in the organization’s magazine, Impact. Based in the United Kingdom, the Operational Research Society is the world’s oldest-established learned society catering to the Operational Research profession. Shout-it-Now’s profile will appear in an upcoming issue of Impact.

]]>The young woman who helped Shout-it-Now reach the 400,000 test milestone is 35 year old Malefu, who lives in Kwanele in Ekurhuleni. This was Malefu’s second time testing with Shout-it-Now. “You know, there are times when we all can make a mistake with a partner,” she told us. “When that happens, I know it is better to learn your status as soon as possible. So when I saw the tents as I was making my way to work I thought, ‘Shout-it-Now has a great service. Let me go quickly now and learn my status because I don’t have time to go to the clinic.’ I’m glad I did. It was a relief to hear I am still negative!”
Shout-it-Now’s other clients agree that the service is superior to many other HIV testing providers. Recently the organization conducted a client satisfaction survey and found that clients overwhelmingly enjoyed the technology, video-based education and the personalized counseling they received from Shout-it-Now, with more than 96% of clients stating they would recommend Shout-it-Now to a friend. In 2016 Shout-it-Now will be adding three new teams in order to expand services to new areas of Ekurhuleni North, South and East.

The group came to see for themselves how Shout-it-Now’s innovative blend of technology, marketing and public health successfully delivers HIV testing to the people of Ekurhuleni. Shout-it-Now was recently awarded an HIV/AIDS Community Grant to expand its successful linkage to care program. “It was an honor to have the Consul General visit Shout-it-Now and take such a hands-on approach to learning how we deliver HIV testing,” said Shout-it-Now’s Chairman, Bruce Forgrieve. “We are grateful to Mr. Rowan and his team for their support, in particular for awarding us a HIV/AIDS Community Grant, which will enhance our linkage to care program.”
While on site, the Consul General and his staff participated in every aspect of Shout-it-Now’s counseling and testing process, including donning headphones so they could experience our online video-based HIV/AIDS edutainment, and Mr. Rowan even got tested. “I was so impressed by the services Shout-it-Now delivers in the field,” said Mr. Rowan. “The whole process reflected a very innovative use of technology and public health, which made the experience of re-confirming my HIV status interesting and efficient. The emphasis on privacy for the client will go a long way toward encouraging people to test who might otherwise shy away. We are proud to partner with programs like Shout-it-Now.”

]]>Since October 2015, Shout-it-Now has built and launched three new HIV testing teams. These three teams have joined Shout-it-Now’s two original teams to significantly expand access to community based HIV testing services throughout the most affected areas of Ekurhuleni. The new teams have brought with them new energy and ideas for reaching those most at risk for HIV infection, including outreach to [insert descriptions of new populations and/or venues we are now serving].
Just recently the entire organization gathered at the Sabari Country Lodge outside of Johannesburg for an Indaba that included training sessions on new HIV testing techniques, team skills building and strategic planning. Ekurhuleni is one of the districts most burdened with HIV/AIDS in all of South Africa. The organization’s goal over the coming year is to saturate the district with HIV testing in order to help achieve the first step in the global 90-90-90 strategy, which is for 90% of HIV positive people to be identified and linked to care.

]]>“Since 2014,Shout-it-Now has delivered more than 70% of all HTS in Ekurhuleni, including more than 35,000 tests delivered to adolescent girls and young women, a population highly vulnerable to HIV infection and one that desperately needs easy access to HIV testing and care,” said
During the visit by Dr. Knight and Mr. Smith, they were able to see how technology, marketing and efficiency have contributed to Shout-it-Now’s success in engaging people to learn their HIV status.
They also toured the organization’s centralized Call Centre. Kathryn Pahl, PhD, Shout-it-Now’s Managing Director, observed, “I could tell that Dr. Knight and Mr. Smith really appreciated the depth of our Call Centre approach to linkage to care. Reading about it is very different to standing here observing ourrepresentatives as they call clients using motivational interviewing that is guided by our database containing clinical and psychosocial information on each client.”
